Zoox, the autonomous vehicle company owned by Amazon, has announced that its driverless robotaxi, without a steering wheel or pedals, has received approval to operate on public roads with passengers in California.
Zoox’s Robotaxi: A Comfortable and Safe Milestone in Autonomous Vehicle Technology
The vehicle is the first of its kind and is being celebrated as a milestone in autonomous vehicle technology.
The robotaxi is designed to provide riders with a comfortable and safe experience. The vehicle can reach speeds of up to 40 mph and has been approved to operate on public roads during daylight hours on weekends in a limited area in Foster City, California, where Zoox is headquartered.
First Purpose-built Robotaxi
The vehicle is not the first autonomous vehicle to have ferried passengers on public roads. However, it is the first purpose-built robotaxi without any manual controls. Google had previously ferried passengers in its purpose-built Firefly vehicle on open roads more than five years ago. But, according to Jesse Levinson, founder and CTO of Zoox, the Google prototype was not built to comply with federal safety standards, nor could it exceed 25 mph.
Zoox’s purpose-built robotaxi is designed to comply with the complete set of FMVSS, is fully street-legal, and has a comprehensive set of safety and comfort features for riders. The vehicle has a range of sensors and cameras that allow it to navigate public roads safely, including left/right turns, unprotected cross-traffic, and speeds up to 35 MPH.
AV Testing in Multiple Cities
The Zoox vehicle is currently testing AVs in Seattle, Las Vegas, and the Bay Area, and the company is one of the few that is building its autonomous vehicles. Cruise, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors, is expected to begin mass production of its Origin vehicle later this year.
As the autonomous vehicle industry moves closer to commercialization, both Zoox and Cruise will need permission from the federal government to build vast quantities of vehicles that don’t comply with current safety standards, which require traditional controls like pedals and steering wheels. Nonetheless, Zoox’s robotaxi is an exciting step towards the widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles on public roads.

In conclusion, Zoox has made history with the first ever purpose-built robotaxi driving autonomously on open public roads with passengers. This milestone is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the entire Zoox crew. Starting from scratch, they assessed all-new innovations and put their vehicle through rigorous testing scenarios before finally hitting the open roads.
With the self-certification to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and the driverless testing permit from the California Department of Motor Vehicles, Zoox is one step closer to bringing their purpose-built robotaxi to the general public. This breakthrough moment marks the beginning of a new era in transportation, where the focus is on rider comfort and enjoyment, and we are one step closer to a world where commutes are seamless and journeys are a joy to experience. The road ahead for Zoox is bright, and we can’t wait to see what they’ll achieve next.
