Sony will supply Apple with its most advanced image sensors that will be used in the iPhone 15 series of smartphones.
Sony Semiconductor Solutions
The new sensor from Sony Semiconductor Solutions roughly doubles the saturation signal level per pixel compared to conventional image sensors.
This is the industry’s first multilayer CMOS sensor. The photodiode and pixel transistors of conventional CMOS sensors are built on the same layer, but in the new sensor they are located on different layers. It offers wide dynamic range, high light sensitivity and low noise. Obviously, this technology has not yet been applied to any sensor from Sony.
It is unclear whether Apple will be the first to adopt these sensors. It’s also unclear if it will be used on all iPhone 15s or earlier models. Given the trends of the last few years and all the rumors about Apple’s intention to further segment the small and large iPhones, the new sensor will be exclusive to the larger models or even the iPhone 15 Ultra.
