Google has announced the launch of a new Cybersecurity Career Certificate program, aiming to train a fresh wave of cybersecurity professionals. The program is part of Google’s ongoing Career Certificates initiative, which seeks to address the growing skills gap in various industries.

Currently, there are over 750,000 open cybersecurity jobs in the US alone, while cyberattacks have increased by 38% worldwide. Google’s Cybersecurity Certificate program will provide affordable and accessible training on threat identification and mitigation, alongside hands-on experience with tools such as Python, Linux, and Security Information and Event Management Systems (SIEM).

Fostering Diversity in Cybersecurity

The program also presents an opportunity to attract a more diverse pool of candidates for cybersecurity jobs, including women and underrepresented workers of color. Google’s commitment to expanding the cybersecurity workforce is evident in the certificate’s design, created and taught by Google’s own cybersecurity experts. The program aims to prepare learners for entry-level positions in cybersecurity within six months, with no prior experience required.

Since its inception in 2018, Google’s Career Certificate Consortium has collaborated with over 150 employers and partnered with over 400 educational institutions, focusing on closing critical skills gaps across multiple sectors.

Addressing the Shortage of Qualified Cybersecurity Professionals

The US faces a severe shortage of qualified cybersecurity workers, with over 755,000 job openings across companies and government agencies. In response, major employers like Google pledged millions of dollars in July 2022 to invest in training, apprenticeships, and partnerships with academic institutions during a White House summit.

The Cybersecurity Certificate, taking less than six months to complete, costs between $150 and $300 on average. To date, over 300,000 people have graduated from Google’s broader Career Certificates program. The company has partnered with institutions such as the University of Texas system, Syracuse University, and the Northern Virginia Community College system to offer the certificate.

Strengthening the Cybersecurity Workforce

Google’s new certificate aims to help build a safer world by addressing the major skills gap in cybersecurity. By offering accessible training to people from diverse economic and educational backgrounds, Google hopes to expand the cybersecurity workforce and protect critical infrastructure from the growing threat of cyberattacks. With the launch of the Google Cybersecurity Certificate, the company continues to demonstrate its commitment to fostering a strong and diverse cybersecurity workforce for the future.
