The TikTok platform and its parent company ByteDance confirmed that members of ByteDance’s internal audit team tracked the physical location of journalists by IP address while the vulnerability was patched.
Financial Times and Forbes
The idea is to check how close journalists are to ByteDance employees, who can pass information to them using their TikTok accounts. Financial Times, Forbes, and some journalists close to them were hunted. Both publications have published articles criticizing TikTok based on leaked information, ranging from the firing of an executive who “didn’t believe” in maternity leave to TikTok’s ties to China and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
“The wrongdoing of some individuals who no longer use ByteDance was a blatant abuse of their access to user data. This type of abuse is unacceptable and inconsistent with our efforts to improve user trust,” TikTok spokeswoman Hilary McQueen De told Forbes.
Five people were fired for their actions—internal audit chief Chris Lepitak, department head, China director Sun Ye and two other employees.
