π«π₯ The last major ad-free streaming service is waving goodbye!
π Starting Jan. 29th, Amazon binge-watchers will π ads popping up on their favorite movies and TV shows on Prime Video.
An email blast to subscribers this Tuesday spilled the beans. To dodge the ads on Prime Video, you’ll have to shell out an extra $3 a month on top of the $139 yearly Prime membership fee.

ποΈ βStarting January 29, Prime Video movies and TV shows will be rolling with limited ads,β announced Amazon in an email to Prime members. βThis move lets us pump more cash into awesome shows and keep upping our game over time.β
πΊπΈ The big five of streaming in America are now all ad-clubs! Prime Video is joining the bandwagon, chasing Max and Paramount+, which introduced ads back in 2021, and Netflix and Disney+ who jumped on the ad train late 2022. The shift was rumored, but now the date is set, marking the end of our ad-free streaming fantasy.
Once, streaming promised a world of TV and movies without interruptions, a low-cost, ad-free paradise. Prime was the last big name resisting ads, but it’s now followed the lead of other media titans.
π Streaming’s turned into a fancy, choose-your-own cable. In the subscription game, viewers are kings:
they pay the bills for ad-free bingeing. But with ads, viewers become the product, a wealthy demographic for sale to advertisers. Amazon knows what you like, and now they’re using that to sell ad space. Adding ads to save $3 might seem small, but it feels like a final farewell to ad-free streaming. The main twist from cable? Your shows are now picked by algorithms tailored just for you.
