Foxconn Relocates Apple iPad and MacBook Production to Vietnam

In December 2020, Foxconn Technology Group quietly finalised plans to relocate some of its Apple iPad and MacBook production to Vietnam. The move, which has been on the drawing board since late 2020, is expected to become a reality this year with the first products rolling off its plant in Vietnam’s Bai Giang province as early as May. Both Foxconn and Apple have yet to formally confirm the shift, but the plan aligns with Apple’s strategy to make Vietnam the largest final assembler for its products outside mainland China.

Apple’s Shift to India and Vietnam Reflects Growing Urgency to Reduce Reliance on China

Global manufacturers, including Apple, have been reducing their reliance on China over the past few years due to rising labor costs, tariffs imposed by former US President Donald Trump, and output disruptions caused by the country’s previous zero-Covid approach. In addition to Foxconn’s move to Vietnam, Apple has also contracted Taipei-based Wistron Corp to assemble the iPhone SE in India since 2017 and announced plans to produce the latest iPhone14 in the country within months of its worldwide release.

India and Vietnam’s Growing Role in Apple’s Supply Chain

India and Vietnam are playing an increasingly significant role in Apple’s supply chain as the company looks to reduce its reliance on China. Apple has contracted Taipei-based Wistron Corp to assemble the iPhone SE in India since 2017 and announced plans to produce the latest iPhone14 in the country within months of its worldwide release. In addition to Foxconn’s move to Vietnam, these shifts in production reflect Apple’s strategy to diversify its supply chain and mitigate risks associated with depending too heavily on one country.

Impact on China’s Electronic Manufacturers

The shift away from China as a major source for Apple’s supply chain could have a significant impact on the country’s electronic manufacturers. China has long been known as “the world’s factory” for a wide range of industries, and Apple’s decision to reduce its reliance on Chinese suppliers could prompt other organizations to do the same. “Apple really helped Chinese organizations be recognized as the leading electronic manufacturers, [so] losing this marquee brand will have other organizations looking to do this,” said Alan Day, the founder of UK-based supply chain consultancy State of Flux.

The shift away from China as a major source for Apple’s supply chain could have a significant impact on the country’s electronic manufacturers and could prompt other organizations to follow suit. This move is also part of Apple’s strategy to make Vietnam the largest final assembler for its products outside mainland China, with India becoming a major leg up to take the step from making outdated models to fabricating latest releases.
