Tesla has received approval from the Dutch vehicle authority RDW to install its latest and upgraded FSD Hardware 4.0, also known as HW4, in Model S and X vehicles.
The Future is Here: Tesla’s FSD Hardware 4.0 Upgrades Unveiled
The certificate, dated January 20, 2023, paves the way for Tesla to launch what will be the most technologically advanced vehicles in the world.
The FSD 4.0 comes with a slew of upgrades, although the details of the new system have not been revealed. Experts speculate that the upgrades may include a generation 4 complex vehicle control system (Autopilot), a new computer that is four times more powerful than the one available in FSD 3, and a new GNSS antenna for navigation.
Other upgrades include changes to Automatic Dipped and Main Beam Sensor, unification of Model X brake system application, new stay arm for Model X interior rear-view mirror, update to manufacturer’s engine code, update to vehicle’s rear badging, an increased speed limit of 174 MPH (280 km/h), and new 5MP autopilot cameras.
Tesla is also planning to roll out the Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit, which can boost the vehicle speed to 200 MPH (322 km/h).
No Retrofits for Older Models
In a recent interview, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company would not offer retrofits for older models to upgrade to FSD 4.0. The cost and difficulty of retrofitting hardware 3 with hardware 4 are quite significant, making it economically unfeasible. Moreover, the new computer may be difficult to fit with the old models.
It makes sense for the company not to offer the upgrade to older models, as upgrading the existing fleet of millions of cars would put huge pressure on the company both financially and physically.

Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ:
What makes FSD 4.0 so different from its predecessor, FSD 3?
FSD 4.0, also known as HW4, boasts significant upgrades from its predecessor, FSD 3. The most notable of these upgrades is the generation 4 complex vehicle control system (Autopilot), which is expected to bring a host of new autonomous driving features to Tesla vehicles.
The new computer in FSD 4.0 is also four times more powerful than the one in FSD 3, and a new GNSS antenna has been added to improve navigation. These upgrades, along with several other improvements, will make Tesla vehicles the most technologically advanced on the road.
What is the Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit, and how will it impact Tesla vehicles?
The Carbon Ceramic Brake Kit is an upcoming upgrade for Tesla vehicles that will allow them to achieve even higher speeds than before. With this kit, Tesla vehicles will be capable of reaching speeds of up to 200 MPH (322 km/h), making them some of the fastest cars on the road.
The kit includes carbon ceramic rotors, which are lighter and more durable than traditional steel rotors, and high-performance brake pads. While the kit will be an optional upgrade, it will likely appeal to Tesla enthusiasts and speed enthusiasts alike.
Why won't Tesla offer retrofits for older models to upgrade to FSD 4.0?
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated that the cost and difficulty of retrofitting older models with FSD 4.0 would be too great to make it economically feasible.
While it's possible that some enterprising Tesla owners may attempt to upgrade their vehicles on their own, it's not a process that Tesla will support or endorse. Instead, the company is focused on rolling out FSD 4.0 to new Model S and X vehicles, which will come equipped with the latest hardware.
What are the potential benefits of FSD 4.0 for Tesla drivers?
With its advanced Autopilot features, FSD 4.0 has the potential to make driving safer, more convenient, and more enjoyable for Tesla drivers. The new Autopilot system is expected to have a greater level of situational awareness, allowing it to handle more complex driving scenarios with greater ease.
This could reduce the stress and fatigue associated with long drives, making it more enjoyable to get behind the wheel. Additionally, FSD 4.0 is likely to bring new features like automatic parking and autonomous valet, which could save drivers time and make parking easier.
When can we expect FSD 4.0 to be available in new Model S and X vehicles?
Tesla has not announced an exact launch date for FSD 4.0, but now that the company has received European approval for the new hardware, it could be released any day. Tesla typically announces major hardware upgrades well in advance, giving customers time to prepare for the launch.
However, in the case of FSD 4.0, the company has been more tight-lipped about its plans, leaving fans and industry experts eagerly anticipating the release of the most advanced autonomous driving system yet.
