The implementation of self-driving taxis, such as Cruise and Waymo, in San Francisco has led to an unexpected problem.
Cruise Passengers Falling Asleep, Causing False Emergency Calls and Wasting Resources
Passengers in these vehicles have been falling asleep and causing false emergency calls to be made. City agencies have reported that this has resulted in the wasting of both financial and human resources.
In a letter sent to the California regulatory body, various city agencies complained that since December, employees of the company Cruise have made three calls to 911 after passengers in the vehicle stopped responding to the integrated voice communication system. Each time, police and fire department personnel were dispatched to the scene, only to find a sleeping passenger.
The agencies have raised concern that these situations result in a senseless waste of resources, both financial and human. Emergency response resources, funded by taxpayers and intended for emergency situations, are being depleted by these false calls. This could potentially compromise their availability for real emergencies.
