London, Dec 5 – In a bold move, Amazon (AMZN.O) has lodged a complaint with the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), claiming that Microsoft (MSFT.O) employs restrictive practices in the cloud computing sector.
🕵️♂️ The Investigation Begins
Following a referral from Ofcom, the CMA initiated an inquiry into the UK’s cloud computing industry, focusing on the dominant positions of Amazon and Microsoft. This move comes amidst growing concerns over the concentrated power of major tech firms in key digital markets.
📝 Amazon’s Allegations
In a statement released on the CMA’s website, Amazon accused Microsoft of altering its service terms to hinder customers from switching to other cloud providers or using competing services alongside Microsoft’s. This issue primarily revolves around software licensing, with Amazon arguing that customers are financially disincentivized from selecting providers other than Microsoft due to the need for separate licenses.
