LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, announced today that it has developed the Thin Actuator Sound Solution, a new sound technology for automobiles.
This new technology will be commercially available in the first half of 2023, ushering in a new era of vehicle infotainment.
LG Display technology
Thin Actuator Sound Solution speakers, as opposed to conventional speakers, are extremely thin and lightweight due to LG Display’s film-type exciter technology. Components such as the voice coil, cone, and magnet all contribute to the overall size and weight of conventional speakers.
In addition to displaying panels, the device is able to vibrate off various materials inside the vehicle body to produce a rich, 3D immersive sound experience.
Car Speaker
Thin Actuator Sound Solution comes in a passport-like size (150mm x 90mm) with a thickness of 2.5mm, equivalent to that of two coins stacked together, and a light weight of 40g, making it 30 percent of the weight and 10 percent of the thickness of a conventional car speaker.
The device’s innovative form factor and compact size allow it to be installed in various parts of the car, including the dashboard, headliner, pillar, and headrests, while maintaining good audio quality for passengers. The built-in nature of the device not only makes it possible to remove speaker grilles, but it also frees up space for increased space efficiency by removing the speakers.
Eco-friendly
In addition, LG Display has eliminated the use of rare earth elements such as neodymium (Nd) normally used in conventional speakers, boosting the eco-friendly quality of the speakers.
The Thin Actuator Sound Solution has been recognised with the CES®2023 Innovation Award (‘In-Vehicle Entertainment & Safety’ category) for its spatial efficiency, design innovation, sound experience innovation, and sustainability. As a result of this collaboration, the Thin Actuator Sound Solution will be showcased at LG Display’s booth at CES 2023.
“LG Display has transformed the bulky and heavy speaker into an ultra-modern ‘invisible’ sound solution by using our cutting-edge technology to increase space, design, and eco-friendly aspects, blended with a superior sound experience.” said Yeo Chun-ho, Vice President and Head of LG Display’s Business
