In December, a unique experiment to generate electricity from snow begins in Aomori, Japan. It lasts until spring. It is expected to be more economical and environmentally friendly than using solar panels.
Profitable and Eco-friendly
For the experiment, they used an indoor school pool and dumped the accumulated snow on the street. Fluid heat transfer pipes are also installed in the pool. It’s snowing on one side and the sun is warming up on the other. This creates a convective motion of the fluid that drives a small turbine and generates power. The greater the temperature difference, the more energy is extracted.
In the future, the scientists plan to increase the efficiency of the system by heating the second part of the liquid tube from a hot underground source. To date, exact numbers demonstrating the feasibility of such a system have not been provided or even estimated.
As mentioned, these systems are virtually waste-free, while solar panels and wind farms require waste disposal.
